No matter how many times the critics panned George Lucas' latest movie, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" had the highest grossing opening weekend of the year at $101,000,000 and 10th highest of all-time. "Iron Man" had the previous high in 2008 at $98,618,668.
So, in four days, Indy 4 made $126,000,000. To put that amount in perspective, that's about HALF of "Iron Man's" TOTAL gross (which is $252,314,000 in 24 days).
But, that doesn't mean that "Iron Man" isn't doing well. It's doing VERY well. It was less than $3m short of second place after "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" dropped 58.2% from its opening weekend.
So far, the biggest disappointment of the summer is "Speed Racer." The movie cost $120m to make and in 17 days it has made only $60,813,000 if you COMBINE domestic and foreign totals.
"Speed Racer" is also officially making less money domestically than "What Happens in Vegas," "Made of Honor," "Baby Mama," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "The Forbidden Kingdom" and is barely above "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay."
